Filming the ending - D

Here are some photographs of the two protagonists, Esli and I. In terms of tribes/demographics, both Esli and I would fall into the target audience of our video, have a look at the ironic rap squats for proof. It was a fairly long day of filming and we got a large amount of stuff done.

Creating a narrative - J

Iconography and Symbolism - D

The first half of our video consists largely of a montage of shots, all either amplifying the lyrics on screen, or being closely related in one way or another. They fit the genre iconography and the lyrics in specific ways, some more obvious than others.

This, for instance is an obvious example of amplifying, the lyrics matching it are "great love it takes time", and the image of a clock is a fairly obvious representation of that. Originally we wanted to do a time-lapse of the hands moving, but we sacrificed this in order to have the light come across it.

Again, these shots are symbolic of sexuality and physical representation of emotion. The lyrics for the first shot are "tight as the grip of a squid/gentle as the finger-touch of a newborn kid"

Furthering this idea, we have a strong feature of the colour red, which has connotations of passion, virility. This loud colour in the first half of the video contrasts with the latter, largely bleak half.

The candles in the darkness again have more contrast between the white of the flames and the dark, contrasting the times of the past (passion, hot, warm palette) with the times of the future (bleak, dreary, etc.)

Religious iconography, especially that found in catholicism has ties of self-punishment and sin.

PROGRESS REPORT - J

Construction of narrative further extended by the introduction of a new (female) character:

Her presence is ambiguous at first and more is revealed about her and her significance to the protagonist. This is done to draw the viewer by creating suspense.

Promotional album covers - D

Here is the promotional single cover that we made. It roughly follows the conventions established by the album cover for James Blake's own Overgrown cover, but also drawing inspiration from Nirvana's 'BLEACH' with the black borders, they give it . The font also fits in with the tone of the song itself.

We used the photo edit tools when importing the photos to saturate the colours, increase the contrast and remove highlights which in brought out the features of the "artist" and overall

FILMING PROGRESS REPORT -J

A great part of our music video takes place in open fields and this alone provides interesting effects in relation to lighting and the colour pallet. The lonely, distant, and largely empty places fits in well with our general motifs and helps to emphasise the protagonists broody look. Also filming in different

PROGRESS REPORT - D

So we're a few weeks into editing the video and so far it's going alright. Admittedly we're having some difficulties adjusting to using Final Cut Pro, as for both Jannat and I it's our first time using video editing software (aside from Windows Movie Maker, but does that really count), at the moment we're trying to gather up as much raw footage using a variety of shot distances, and focusing on filming shots to establish the narrative, seeing as so far we've not done much other than filming "Bearded Goth Walks in Field", instead of the story of lost love etc etc.

We also experimented using different colour correction filters, and will incorporate some in order to create a blue/sickly green hue and bring more focus to the opposition between the sky and my breh's silhouette
The top one has more of a green tint to it, reminiscent of some of the videos we draw inspiration from; i.e.

We'll experiment more with making the video even bluer, and perhaps try to film some more of the shots at earlier times in the morning, (hah!) when the air is wet and there are few people.
